At Western Primary School, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children and we want pupils to leave the school equipped to be able to enjoy sport for all its health and social benefits.

In addition, we consider that an outstanding PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of the children. Through sport, the children further develop the important qualities of discipline, resilience, communication, team work, and ambition: qualities that they are then able to use in their learning within the classroom.

We also make secure links between subjects, e.g. science and P.E. so that the children understand the importance of healthy living and appreciate the importance of sport and physical activity in this respect. Many pupils pursue their interest in sport outside of school and the school seeks to signpost pupils to sport in the community.

Consequently, teaching and learning is planned to engage the interests of pupils and to offer an imaginative, stimulating and challenging sports programme so pupils enjoy school and value all the experiences it offers. The children are therefore committed to their learning and have positive attitudes towards school life in all its forms.

The PE programme is inclusive, available to all pupils regardless of age, gender or ability and involves clubs both during and after the school day. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils receive at least 2 hours of high quality, well-planned PE per week delivered by confident and well-trained teachers and coaches to a high level, guaranteeing both pupil achievement and enjoyment. This has had an impact on the engagement and quality of work produced by our pupils; they have high self-esteem and the confidence to challenge themselves and critically evaluate each other; they encourage peers to work beyond their comfort zone as well as set and go beyond their personal best targets.

With the support of Sporting Influence, the school takes part in regular competitions.  Through the local Sports Partnership, the school takes part in family and partnership competitions. Other agencies are used to enhance the variety of extra-curricular activities available and talented children are signposted to local clubs and events to encourage them to develop their skills. We have found this beneficial as it has given our children the opportunity to participate regularly in Inter-School competitions, and use the wider range of resources which the secondary schools in the cluster are able to offer
