Local Governing Body

What do governors do?

Every school has a legal requirement to have a governing body. The governors’ role is strategic; the head teacher is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school. The governors are there to support the school in providing the best education for the pupils and we do this by:

  • setting the school’s values, vision and strategic aims together with the staff
  • agreeing plans and policies and ensuring resources are used effectively
  • monitoring and evaluating performance
  • providing support and constructive challenges to the head teacher as he leads the school
  • ensuring that Western is accountable to all stakeholders.

The co-opted governors are invited and appointed by the other governors based on the skills that are needed and that they can bring to the governing body. Our aim is to have a good mix of skills, experiences and perspectives to contribute to the school. All the governors give their time on a voluntary basis.

All the governors serve a statutory term of four years but some of Western´s governors have been elected to serve for a further term, thus providing invaluable experience and continuity. The Full Governing Body (all the governors) meets at least five times during the school year; we have appointed lead governors to deal with specific areas who liaise with members of staff in that capacity. We also have an excellent clerk, who helps us communicate with each other efficiently.

At the first Full Governing Body meeting of the year, governors are required to complete a Register of Business Interest. The register sets out the relevant business interests of governors and details any other educational establishments they govern. For the current year, the return for each governor is nil.

You are welcome to speak to any of the governors - either catch a parent governor in the playground or ask at the school office.
