Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Intent

The intent of the MFL curriculum at Western Primary is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children’s confidence to speak. We stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language. We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and for children to apply their learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning. At Western we teach French from Y1 to Y6.

MFL Journey

Inspiring ambitious learners

We teach French to children from Year 1 to Year 6. French is taught by a specialist HLTA.  We believe that exposing children to language at a younger age helps to build their confidence and skills set. With our youngest children this is taught in a fun and engaging way using stories, rhymes, games and songs. At the start of our learning, we recap previous vocabulary and skills learned. We teach the children about the country of France alongside its culture and traditions. We offer other extra-curricular opportunities to learn a language - e.g. Mandarin.

Vocabulary

Our vocabulary is linked to our many different topics (see our curriculum journey). Children have regular opportunities to revisit taught vocabulary and practise using their vocabulary in different situations and contexts.

Skills

Children are taught basic oral skills in KS1. This progresses to further speaking and listening, reading and writing skills in KS2. Once children are confident with these skills they will begin to develop translation skills.  Verb conjugation skills are also taught in KS2.

Exceptional Learning

High expectations are evident throughout the M.F.L. curriculum at Western. The lessons are often taught through stories, drama and art, ensuring the children are engaged through different approaches. The use of iPads has enhanced the children’s learning, enabling them to evidence their learning creatively.

We believe that giving the children the opportunity to learn French from an early age helps to embed and develop a love of language from the start!
