Reading intent

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum at Western. Children learn the skill of reading though the Little Wandle phonics scheme in EYFS and KS1. Following this structured phonics scheme gets the children off to a flying start and they are subject to a consistent approach to phonics, which is led by fully trained and confident staff members. The programme teaches children to decode and build word recognition through daily phonics and reading sessions throughout EYFS and KS1 and we support and encourage a love of reading for pleasure through sharing a variety of texts daily. The children at Western all enjoy a reading for pleasure book which, for our younger children, is chosen and encouraged to be shared by a more competent reader at home. Our older and more confident readers from years 3-6 enjoy choosing their own literature from our extensive KS2 library or classroom libraries. Weekly, whole-class reading comprehension lessons in KS2, support the children to develop their understanding of a text.
